    Sandra Black: Holding Light

In a career spanning over five decades, Western Australian ceramicist Sandra Black weaves elements her personal narrative into a body of work defined by resolved design and exceptional craftmanship.

Sandra Black: Holding light was published alongside the artists first major career survey at The Art Gallery of Western Australia. Featuring photographs of Black’s work, a chronology of her life, and an essay by exhibition curator Isobel Wise, the book traces Black’s journey from her childhood in regional Victoria to her emergence as an artist of international renown. It highlights how her rural upbringing and connection to nature shaped her creative vision, while emphasising the importance of family, friendship and travel in supporting her practice.

Exploring the foundation of her practice, including the origins of her process of piercing and carving porcelain vessels, Sandra Black: Holding light chronicles her career path as she refined her techniques and pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved through the medium of clay.
