Handmade and Local

October 10, 2024

With the opening of local ceramicist Sandra Black’s comprehensive survey of works, Holding light at AGWA, the Design Store is celebrating Sandra Black’s 50 years of practice.

In honour of Black’s exhibition, the Design Store is also acknowledging the work of other talented Western Australian ceramics artisans.

As well as some stunning Sandra Black pieces, the Design Store curators have sourced beautiful and quality ceramics that highlight a groundswell for this traditional art. On show over the coming weeks will be new works from Jackie Masters, Chrissie Hogan and MAB Ceramics.

And of course, Design Store regulars, Winter Wares, Jenny Dawson, Aileen Corbett and Paul O'Connor.

Multi-disciplinary WA artist, Chrissie Hogan has a long association with AGWA.

Chrissie Hogan | $340

Hogan explains, “Being included in the AGWA Design Store and this selection of work is a wonderful opportunity for people to see touch and buy my art.

“My pieces at the Design Store include hand built and thrown in stoneware and glazed with tones that allow the clay to speak and not be overpowered. My hand is always evident in my style from a simple spoon to a mythologically inspired winged urn. All are very user friendly and can live happily in the everyday,” said Hogan.

WA has a rich and abundant ceramics community, with many internationally recognised clay artists choosing WA as their home. In October 2025 WA will host Australia’s largest National Ceramics Triennale. Until then we invite you to discover the diverse and detailed works of those creatives here at the Design Store.
