Hicham Benohoud - The Classroom

Exhibiting artist in AGWA’s No night is long enough for us to dream twice, Moroccan artist Hicham Benohoud explores control, discipline and postcolonial identity in The Classroom.

Created between 1994 and 2002 while Benohoud was working as an art teacher in Marrakech, the series emerged from collaborative photographic experiments with his students. Staged within the confines of the classroom, the images combine absurdity, humour and unease, contrasting creative freedom with the rigidity of the educational environment. Drawing from Benohoud’s original archive of negatives, this publication presents the first comprehensive appraisal of this influential series.
