The Significance and Relevance of Early Modern Indian Painters to the Contemporary Indian Art, written in 1971, reevaluates the artistic legacies inherited by Nilima Sheikh. Looking beyond the competing influences of British Colonialism and the search for an explicitly “Indian” identity, Sheikh considers artists including Raja Ravi Varma, Abanindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher-Gil, Nandalal Bose and Jamini Roy to explore a possible way forward for contemporary Indian painting.
Written as Sheikh’s Master’s dissertation at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, the work is published here for the first time as a complete facsimile, accompanied by a recent interview with the artist by Nihaal Faizal and Sarasija Subramanian.
