Urban Kitsch, originally written in 1996, explores the forms of vernacular visual culture that emerged in Baroda following the liberalisation of India’s economy. From plastic toys and celebrity mud flaps to postmodern architecture, Praneet Soi captures a changing urban landscape and the collision of popular culture, design and everyday life.
Published here for the first time, the book presents a complete facsimile of Soi’s original Master’s dissertation from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. It is accompanied by a recent interview with the artist by Nihaal Faizal and Sarasija Subramanian, revisiting the ideas and observations behind the work.
