Gay Betrayals

In 1997, Leo Bersani critiqued the assimilation of 'gays' into mainstream culture, feeling they were losing their subversive edge. His essay 'Gay Betrayals' advocated for a more disruptive vision of homosexuality, opposing conventional respectability with 'antimonogamous promiscuity'.

Now, two decades later, artists Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings respond to Bersani's ideas. Through drawings and egg tempera paintings, they explore (homo)sociality, portraying figures grappling with power structures, experimenting with inclusivity, and confronting the fluid boundaries of identity and community.
