Ngurra Warndurala Buluyugayi: Exploring Yindjibarndi Country (millstream)

Excerpt:

"The Land and the People

Located in the far northwest of Western Australia, our traditional lands encompass a vast tract of the central and western Pilbara. Yindjibarndi country incorporates Millstream National Park, Yurlburr (Python Pool), Gambulanha (the Hamersley Ranges) and Yandanyirra (the Fortescue River). Nowadays, the majority of Yindjibarndi people live in Roebourne.

The Fortescue River holds great significance to our people. It is seen as giving life to every living creature, turning harsh country into permanent waterholes, and enriching Ngaardangarli (Aboriginal people in their unique traditional lifestyle. We were created as part of our environment and carry a strong knowledge of how the land was created and how it must be treated today.

Our Dreamtime stories and traditional songs often include the names of rivers, hills and waterholes found in our country, helping us to create a detailed mental map of our land."
