100 Vandals

 100 Vandalsbrings together imagery and writing thatreveal unique qualities of graffiti culture, street art and vandalism, their global connectedness and how they unfold in Western Australia. Featuring 100 blackbook drawings by graffiti artists from or connected with Western Australia, this book celebrates theskill, freedom and style of the many devoted artists who leave their mark. Exhibited in 100 Vandals,curated by artists and writers Trevor Bly, Mike Shime and AGWA Associate Curator Isobel Wise, these works were shown at The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) in 2021–22.

Presented in the form of a blackbook – ­a treasured drawing book where graffiti artists practice their hand and share imagery with close peers and crew – this publication was made in collaboration with graffiti artists and relays the feel and visual impact of their personal records of creative interaction.The drawings, tags, stickers and texts in 100 Vandalsoffer insights into the processes and actions of graffiti as well as the local and global nuances of this artform. Featuring essays by independent writers Trevor Bly and James Hattrick, and AGWA Curator Robert Cook, their texts reflect on the history, culture, rationale and policing of graffiti and our response to it as a community.
