Returning is a captivating work that follows Kirli's journey of self-discovery and connection to their culture, addressing important contemporary themes such as decolonisation, identity, and justice. Against the backdrop of significant upheaval, including natural disasters, COVID, and the Black Lives Matter Movement, this piece combines poetry and visual art, with each poem accompanied by poignant artwork that enhances its meaning. Originally displayed at SHAC Gallery in 2021 as part of the 'Returning' exhibition on Gundungurra land, Kirli's multidisciplinary artworks encompass various mediums, including watercolour, ink on hand-dyed silk, digital imagery with text, and installations of handcrafted possum skin cloaks and weavings. The project received valuable input from First Nations Elders, Custodians, academics, and artists.
