    Indigenous Histories

Centuries of art celebrating Indigenous cultures worldwide

Building on the success of Afro-Atlantic Histories, this publication from the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) presents collaborative research by artists and scholars from various Indigenous groups across Australia, North America, South America, and Scandinavia. In partnership with Kode Bergen Art Museum, MASP invited Indigenous curators from nations such as the Inuit, Maori, and Sámi for a travelling exhibition. Featuring over 150 artists, the artworks span from 17th-century colonial religious paintings to contemporary film and video installations, highlighting the effects of European colonisation on Indigenous visual culture. Rather than attempting to fully represent each region’s complex histories, Indigenous Histories aims to provide a concise sampling that creates global juxtapositions. The beautifully designed book includes over 300 illustrations, organised into eight thematic sections, with narratives from guest curators and museum directors worldwide.
