Iwantja

Located on a ridge at the edge of the Indulkana Ranges, Iwantja Arts is one of Australia’s most dynamic Indigenous art centres. Founded in the 1980s during the APY Land Rights movement, it was established by senior artists who campaigned for both community autonomy and a dedicated creative space. Today, the centre is a vibrant intergenerational hub where artists share stories, create work, and continue cultural traditions. Senior figures like co-founder Alec Baker paint alongside emerging talent and acclaimed artists including Vincent Namatjira, Betty Muffler and Kaylene Whiskey. Told in the artists’ own words, Iwantja charts the community’s history and creative legacy.
