M. C Escher TASCHEN

M.C. Escher (1898–1972), a Dutch graphic artist, is renowned for his intricate, mathematically inspired artworks, filled with impossible constructions and optical illusions. His early work featured nature and landscapes, but a visit to the Alhambra in Spain during the 1920s ignited his fascination with repeating patterns and tessellations. Using lithographs and woodcuts, Escher explored complex relationships between shapes and space, creating visual puzzles like the Möbius strip. His work, simultaneously decorative and thought-provoking, has earned admiration from both scientists and fans of psychedelic art.

This TASCHEN introduction highlights key pieces from Escher’s unique explorations of perception.
