In Day Sleeper, artist Sam Contis offers a fresh perspective on the work of renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange’s vast archive, Contis weaves together a poetic and fragmented narrative centred around the motif of the “day sleeper” — a figure evoking both rest and escape. Through this dialogue between two artists’ visions, the book reveals a lesser-known side of Lange’s practice, including intimate family photos, studio portraiture, and street scenes from San Francisco and the East Bay. Day Sleeper was featured in the Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures exhibition at MoMA, February–May 2020.
