This monograph celebrates the prolific practice of Brian Robinson, a Maluyligal and Wuthathi artist whose work draws upon his rich cultural heritage and diverse ancestry. Born on Waiben (Thursday Island) in 1973 and based in Cairns since 1992, Robinson describes himself simply as a “pattern maker” —Minar Palay Mabayg in Torres Strait Island language.
Spanning printmaking, sculpture and public art, Robinson’s distinctive practice intertwines Torres Strait Islander culture, mythology, history and the natural world with pop culture, comics, toys and Western art traditions. Featuring contributions from five respected writers, this richly illustrated publication explores Robinson’s life, influences and multifaceted career, with works held in major public collections throughout Australia and internationally.
