Yuwaalaraay artist and Creative Director at Gaawaa Miyay, Lucy Simpson, draws inspiration from country and relationships for her glass Dhanggal collection. Crafted in collaboration with Canberra Glassworks artisans, each piece is individually cast from an 80-year-old freshwater mussel shell found in the drought-ridden Murray Darling Basin. These shells, remnants of over 2 million mussels lost from 2017-2020, serve as tactile records of time and place. Ranging from translucent to opaque, the collection subtly conveys the fragility of our natural world, emphasising the importance of balance and belonging.
