Pages of Pride

November 14, 2024

During Pride month, November, AGWA Design Store celebrates queer artists, designers, authors and creatives.

Our Design Store book curator, Richelle Singh, has procured a variety of books that offer perspectives on everything from queer cinema to personal stories of belonging and meaning for gay figures throughout history.

New to our shelves is Salman Toor, New Paintings and Drawings featuring the works of Pakistani American artist Salman Toor.

Salman Toor, New Paintings and Drawings, published by AGWA, showcases the artist’s recent work and exploration of contemporary public and private life in context of queer and diasporic identity.

Known for his sumptuous and moody figurative work, taking influence from European old masters, early modernists and impressionism, this book presents a rich palette of Salman’s works on paper with his unique stylised realism using charcoal, gouache, ink and pencil.

AGWA Glambassador

And congratulations to AGWA’s inaugural ART BALL Glambassador, Marco Octaviano.

Crowned, by The Huxleys, as best-dressed at AGWA ART BALL 2024, Marco was awarded a stunning pair of Keiko Uno earrings and will be attending AGWA events across 2025. Marco said he enjoyed an outrageously, fabulous night and felt honoured by the win.

"I'm extremely honoured with the Glambassador title. What do I love about the Art Gallery...As an interior designer, I love the Brutalist, Bauhaus inspired style of Charles Sierakowski who was the architect of the main AGWA Building. It actually reminds me of the grand civic spaces built by Leandro Locsin in the Philippines where I'm from. Having studied Industrial Design and a short dabble in Fashion at North Metropolitan Tafe, the Cultural Centre, specifically the Art Gallery, is an edifice in my creative development and journey as a source of inspiration as well as memories. I adore how the space evolves and comes to life with memorable exhibits and activations that are full of sensorial immersions. From attending a VIP event for the Monet exhibition more than a decade ago, a multitude of ART BALLS to the more recent TIME • RONE and Anna Park, there's always an inspiring discovery just around the corner."
