Cat Corner

October 31, 2024

Last week Australian music icon Kate Ceberano visited AGWA’s Design Store, and her number one purchase was a cowboy-style bolo tie, created by Perth-based artist Cat Conner.

Cat Conner is a self-confessed and unapologetic “clay nerd”. Originally from the US, she grew up in New Mexico and Texas, studying visual art at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She fell in love with Perth on a study-abroad trip and relocated immediately after graduating in 2009. Conner has been working with clay for the last 20 years, obsessed by the unique challenges of this material.

While the pottery wheel is her favourite studio tool, she also makes small hand-built wearables and jewellery. Obsessed with textures, she juxtaposes the smoothness of porcelain and fine-bodied clays with applied slip textures, carving, and intricate sgraffito illustrations, highlighted with 24k gold lustre.

Cat Conner Ceramics – Bolo Tie with Gold Lustre | $165

Cat Conner has created a limited-edition series of bolo ties and ceramics for the Design Store, as part of our Pride WA celebrations.

The bolo tie is typically worn with collared shirts as a necktie alternative on formal occasions, it can also be worn loosely as a necklace. It is a uniquely American tradition originating with the Native American and cowboy-rodeo culture of the Southwest.

Conner takes a piece of cord or braided leather and creates ornamental clasps made with finely wrought silver, turquoise, and other semi-precious stones. This is a non-gendered piece of American culture that can be worn and enjoyed and reinvented by anyone.

We invite you to visit the AGWA Design Store during the month of November as we proudly display the work of queer and diverse artists and designers
